“Occupational hazard.”
That crunchy splat you just heard was my head exploding.
We already knew from 1974 that this series was all about the layers and layers of corruption, but this installment takes things to a whole different level. As a stand-alone film, it’s very, very good. But as the second part of this trilogy, it’s genuinely great.
This one actually deals with the Yorkshire Ripper, and we know pretty much the entire time that there’s some really dodgy stuff going on, and we even kind of know who’s got a hand in all that dodgy stuff (well, there are some others involved we might not have guessed about). But then the whole thing figures out a way to fold back on itself and becomes so much deeper– not just as it exposes the tendrils of corruption, but also in its narrative structure– than we realized. I don’t often feel like a movie completely slaps me in the face, but this one did.
And why don’t we see more of Paddy Considine? That dude’s good.
